Gary Lycett
Stirling Education
Gary’s first experience in teaching began in Leeds after having obtained a Creative Writing degree from Leeds University. This role was a voluntary position and it involved teaching asylum seekers elementary English so that they could build up the confidence to use it in their everyday lives. He thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, but he especially valued how they were able to express their cultural backgrounds to him with the English he had taught them. This motivated him into gaining a CELTA which allowed him to teach in language schools around the world. He chose to teach in Taiwan due to its mysterious and exotic location as he felt it offered up a unique challenge of which it did and after a year spent there he then went on to teach in Spain to be closer to home. After his time in Spain, he decided to make Warsaw his home and he has been there for nearly fifteen years now. He has taught in language schools and international schools and he continually strives to improve himself as a teacher which is why he has recently completed an MA in Education and Management from Wrexham University.
As a teacher, he believes that pupils gain deeper understanding through application. Even when observing his first students whom he taught many years ago, applying their knowledge to real world situations, he could see how they could grasp the intricacies of their learning through practical applications. That is why he values the fact that involving every student within the classroom gives them the opportunity to gain a deeper insight into the work they do in lessons and how that can transfer itself into their personal life.
